That time of the year is upon us yet again. The Baton Rouge tradition of fireworks on the levee. Last year a few model citizens of this fine city brought their own form of firepower to the levee, a few hand guns. For unknown reasons, they opened fire into the crowd after the fireworks were over with (perhaps they didn't think the finale had enough 'boom' to it) and struck a couple of people who were nothing more than innocent bystanders there to enjoy the show. One of those hit, 16 year old Kayla Smith, was hit in the torso and suffered a spinal injury that rendered her paralyzed. What for? Because a few idiots have no regard for the rest of society and choose to do whatever they want to do. Unfortunately for the thugs involved, they were caught and the justice system will have its way... [Read More]

Now that all the hype over getting Blanco out of office has died down and its back to business as usual, people are starting to see the real Bobby Jindal. Sure he came out of the gate strong and appeared to have some great plans for the state, but low and behold the typical politician demeanor has surfaced. By that I’m talking about your average 'say whatever you think they want to hear when you're campaigning for office'. By that I'm referring to campaign promises that are usually not worth the paper they're written on. In this case, Jindal printed a pretty specific campaign promise on a flier that he distributed during his campaign. It simply stated that he would... [Read More]

Ironically, the first I heard of this story was while I was sitting on I-12 eastbound between Sherwood Forest Blvd and Millerville rd Monday afternoon. Did I mention I was going 5 mph? No I wasn't doing my part in fuel conservation; I was going with the flow of traffic! Why were we moving that slow, you ask? Simple. Right in the middle of the largest city in the state, we have a grand design to our main interstate roadway that drops 3 lanes down to 2 lanes. Yeah, I don't see how anyone didn't see this teeny little design flaw when they constructed it a few years back. I mean, really, for this stretch of highway it was actually an upgrade at the time. See, Baton Rouge once had the world record for the only actual portion of an interstate roadway that was one (1, uno,... [Read More]

By now, it's no secret that they're watching and waiting day and night. They don't take breaks, they don't take days off and they don't miss when they shoot. Of course you know i'm talking about red light cameras that have begun to pop up at some of our intersections in Baton Rouge.

Some cities have reported a dramatic increase in rear end collisions since they made their appearance in their city, others have reported drops in major accidents at intersections with them. Its too early in the game in Baton Rouge to determine what kind of effect the cameras are having on accident statistics. Officials did say that they've seen a drop in citations given since the opening week. That must be due to the publicity that the camera... [Read More]

This week, Sanchez Brumfield was found guilty of 1st degree murder in the shooting death of Aaron Arnold back in 2006 outside of the Olive Garden restaurant on Siegen Lane. While Brumfield wasn't the actual gunman in the incident, he reportedly gave the 'shoot them' command to the alleged shooter, Tracy Young.

Dionne Grayson and Aaron Arnold were putting gas in Grayson's car behind the restaurant when they were approached and shot. Grayson survived the shooting but Arnold was not so lucky. He was, however, lucky enough that Grayson got a good enough look at the two pieces of garbage responsible for this incident and that she survived to point them out to the jury at Brumfield's trial. Grayson deserves a medal of honor for her... [Read More]

It has been 6 months since that fateful night when 2 innocent LSU students, Chandrasekhar Reddy Komma and Kiran Kumar Allam, were found slain in their university apartment complex. The 2 were victims of what appeared to be a home invasion that ended tragically. For no apparent reason, the 2 men were gunned down and left to die. The killer or killers got away without leaving much if any evidence at all.

The bodies of Chandrasekhar Reddy Komma and Kiran Kumar Allam, a chemistry student and biology student, were both flown home to be laid to rest in their native country of India. The shootings took place as final exams were wrapping up and their weren't many students left around campus which meant little or no witnesses. The case remained open with not very much in the way of... [Read More]

This week, the EBR Sheriffs Office accompanied by a few other agencies including the Baton Rouge Police, Louisiana State Police and EBR Constables Office, hit the streets this week, gunning for people on the list of tens of thousands of outstanding warrants within East Baton Rouge Parish.

The Sheriff's Office reportedly has over 70,000 outstanding warrants around the parish. That does not include warrants from the City of Baton Rouge. Of course we all know that means over 70,000 people who 'didnt do it', but nonetheless, that's a lot of people for one parish.

Keep in mind that, while the term 'warrant' sounds pretty serious, an actual warrant could mean anything from failure to appear in court for a non-moving violation, to being sought for something as... [Read More]
