Last Friday, we had the pleasure of dining at the George O'Neal location of Portobello's Grill. As a long time customer of Portobello's, I knew I was in for an exceptional experience. The first thing you can't help but notice about Portobello's is that the outside of the restaurant literally invites you inside with its well groomed landscaping and modernly decorated exterior. The interior is no exception to the rule either. One might think they were stepping into the home of a close friend or family member for a cozy italian dinner. The first thing you notice is the stylishly stained concrete floors, complimented by superbly groomed plants and exquisitely tasteful wood accents. Even though it was a Friday night and there was a nice sized crowd dining, we were seated very timely with not much of a wait at all. Our waitress, Kristin, was very punctual and wasted no time taking our appetizer order and bringing us our drinks. We started out with the famous stuffed mushrooms appetizer ($7). Our entree order was taken a few moments after the appetizer order was put in and it only seemed like a few minutes passed until the mushrooms arrived. They come stuffed with spinach and artichoke and served in a smoked bacon cream sauce. There are 4 nice sized mushrooms on the plate which is truly a good starter for 4 people. We had barely finished the last mushroom in time to make way for the dinner salads which arrived right on time. Each of them were the standard dinner salads with house and ranch dressings. They were perfectly prepared and just enough. While our waitress was extra friendly and very knowledgeable in regards to the menu items, we found that our drink refills could have been a little more frequent, but that was the only thing that was less than perfect regarding the service from Kristin.
Our entrees all arrived as expected, not too soon and not too late. I had the crabcakes "Louisiana" ($15) and my guests had the shrimp fettucine, ($12) blackened chicken penne pasta ($12) and the delmonico steak with fries ($17). The crab cakes were prepared perfectly and unlike most restaurants that serve crab cakes, Portobello's were packed with crabmeat instead of fillers. A real treat! They came with a fresh bed of greens, tomatoes and drizzled with balsamic vinaigrete. The blackened chicken penne pasta contained an ample amount of chicken with mushrooms and spinach all mixed into a creamy sauce with plenty of penne pasta. Our delmonico ribeye steak was cooked perfectly and was served piping hot with a huge stack of french fries. Last was the shrimp fettucini. It consisted of a very moderate amount of shrimp sauteed in butter, piled onto a nice bed of pasta with alfredo sauce, mushrooms, garlic and crushed red pepper. A true delicacy in every sense of the word. The best thing about all of the entrees at Portobello's is that there is always plenty to take home and enjoy the next day, which we all did.
In short, a trip to Portobello's will guarantee you a great time and more importantly, a great meal. They are well known in town for their fire grilled steaks, chops, chicken and fresh grilled fish. Do yourself a favor and check them out today.
