Some State Senators are hoping to put the brakes on traffic camera companies that catch red light runners across Louisiana.
A Bill by Senator Troy Hebert of Jeanerette would prevent the companies from taking pictures of the front of people's cars and from getting social security numbers.
Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden told the committee he agrees with Hebert that the companies need some limitations. But he also says the cameras help keep our roads safe.
Holden: "We now have a tool that basically says to them, 'okay you're ignoring what's in the law' but now we have this other piece of equipment here that we are using in order to make sure that you are abiding by the law."
Hebert: "What I want to do is set some type of guidelines to where the more these cities are doing this, they have some rules they have to follow. They don't just start doing all these crazy things."
The bill also states the traffic cameras would still take pictures of car license plates, but would restrict them from any other identifying photos.
Hebert's bill is now headed to the Senate floor for another vote.
