In a related story to Monday's horrendous crime scene, we've been hearing widespread complaints from citizens whose telephones rang at home with the urgent message to be on the lookout for a certain vehicle and dangerous occupants.
As law enforcement worked to quickly find suspects for the double murder at the BREC park in Zachary, they activated an emergency alert system. This caused phones to ring parish-wide, as far as 20 miles from the crime scene.
Some people have complained that they were disturbed late Monday night when the phones rang again with an all clear. At his news conference Tuesday afternoon, Sheriff Sid Gautreaux apologized for that.
"We've taken steps to remedy that. In the future, we'll make sure those things don't go out at a late hour, but we are going to continue to use that system. It's a very, very useful tool and it did help us develop some of the early on information that we had," he says.
You can remove your name from that emergency calling list, but if you do, you'll also miss out on special weather and chemical alerts that could be life-and- death issues.
If you still want to be removed, then the sheriff's office says it must be done in writing in one of two ways (you can also add cell phones or other numbers this way):
A postcard to EMS, attention Tammy Armand, specifically requesting removal from the notification system
An email to Tammy Armand at
tarmand@brgov.com
Again, sheriff's officials say the requester must be identifiable in the email and the request must be specific for removal.
