Car Burglaries on the rise in Baton Rouge

East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff's deputies say a few 13-year-olds have been pulling on door handles in one neighborhood, hoping to scrounge up some of your Christmas goods. So far, two teenagers have been arrested. A spokesperson for the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office says this sort of thing is quite popular this time of year. Luckily for the victims, this time around the criminals were caught.
What may appear to be just an ordinary neighborhood has actually become an easy target for car thieves and burglars. Thursday night, East Baton Rouge sheriff's deputies arrested two 13-year-old boys for a slew of break-ins in the Glen Oaks area. Casey Rayborn Hicks says the victims all had one thing in common. "The juveniles were able to take the cars because they were all unlocked. In the cars, they found money, credit cards, weapons that were stolen," she says.
Rayborn says the victims in this particular crime were lucky. Someone who lives in the North Baton Rouge neighborhood saw something suspicious and called police. However, that doesn't always happen. Now, the sheriff's office is urging everyone, regardless of where you live, to lock up and keep a close watch. "We encourage to secure their valuables and report any suspicious actions to us or to Crime Stoppers," Hicks says.
The two teens face a number of charges, ranging from theft to illegal possession of a handgun. Also, we're told all of the stolen items were recovered.
