The task force investigating the LSU murders has released sketches of two suspects in last week's double murder on campus. Students who live there say LSU needs to step up security around that area. Since the incident, an LSU officer has been there at all times. Some people say they wonder if it's safe to be in Baton Rouge.
Mayor Kip Holden says that's one thing he's getting questioned about over and over again, both from locals and in reports that have hit the national level. He wants to remind everyone that these situations do not define the city. However, the crime tape still hangs around the apartment where the deadly shootings took place, and now, a memorial for the two students, 31-year-old Chandraskhar Komma and 33-year-old Kiran Allum is present.
The task force that was formed to look into what happened believes the two men in sketches were looking to rob someone, and may have followed Allum into Komma's apartment. Officials from India say this double murder brought a sadness to their country, especially because Allum's father is a well-known writer there.
For Mayor Kip Holden, this adds another challenge. "Whether or not it is safe to be in Baton Rouge because people all around heard what occurred? Yes, it is safe to be in Baton Rouge," the mayor says. Some students living here now fear for their safety, but Mayor Holden says not living in fear means speaking up. "We're gonna have to come together and understand this. The other day, it was someone else and if you don't speak up, today or tomorrow, it could be you," he says.
Family members of one of the victims flew into Baton Rouge to accompany both bodies back to India. We're told they should be there in a day or two.
