I just read this entire thread again and had to laugh. How can you defend a deputy that gets loaded and drives his police car into a light pole?

One has to wonder if he had just run off the road and not had a wreck and damage the unit if he would have gotten away with it. I see police units speeding well over 70mph through the 60mph zone on I12 daily. These are Baton Rouge City units and in Livingston Parish so I know they are either on their way to work or on their way home and not on an emergency call. And I know once they clock in and go to work they are giving out traffic tickets for the exact same thing I just saw them do.

But yes, they are all just people too. And I don't know about now but a few years ago the statics were that there were a higher percentage of alcoholics on the police forces than in any other occupation. Maybe that's changed. I hope so.

I'm glad no one was hurt. I wonder if he will pay for the car.

I'm sure he will have to foot the bill (or had to anyway) for the repairs. You are correct also. There are lots of alcoholics on the force, sadly enough. I have to say that after serving a short time with the BRPD many years ago, I can almost understand why. Your job is to be everywhere there is trouble be it fights, auto crashes with fatalities, murder, rape, kidnapping, etc. You have to wonder how much negativity one person can take before they turn to something like alcohol. Of course this is no excuse for alcoholism, much less drinking and driving in your marked police unit.

It's certainly a job I wouldn't take. And there are certainly a lot of great people in the Sheriff's Dept. as well as the other police depts.

Driving drunk is so dangerous. And it's usually some innocent child that pays the price.
