A man faces up to 30 years behind bars after being convicted of writing three threatening letters to an FBI agent — all while he was serving time at a Louisiana state prison.
After a one-day trial Monday, a jury convicted Brandon Ortego, 21, of Bunkie, on three counts of mailing a threat to a federal officer.
Prosecutors said the letters, which also threatened the agent's family, were mailed in September 2005 while Ortego was confined to the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center at St. Gabriel, serving a sentence on two counts of aggravated battery.
U.S. District Judge James Brady did not immediately set a sentencing date. Ortego faces up to 30 years in federal prison and a $750,000 fine.
Records of the Louisiana corrections agency showed that Ortego was on probation or in state custody from February 2004 to October 2006, said department spokeswoman Pam Laborde.
