A long-time security guard at a popular fruit stand is shot dead and the killer is still on the loose. Baton Rouge police are investigating the shooting death of 71-year-old Alfred Mequet. The shooting happened just after 4:00 a.m. at Pete's Farmer's Market.
Baton Rouge police say Mequet was on watch at the farmer's market overnight, and that he was shot during an early morning armed robbery attempt. The owner of the market, Doug Pizzolato, says Mequet would work at the stand a couple of nights a week and that he was a longtime friend.
In fact, one man who says he'd stop by the stand every morning just to chat with him. Al Ducote says, "He was a nice fella. I'd talk to him practically every day from my way from the post office."
The Pizzolato's closed the market for the day and say they're even considering moving it to another location in the near future.
