Update:
Louisiana House approves cell phone ban for drivers
The Louisiana House narrowly approved a ban on cell phone use by drivers, unless they use hands-free devices.
Text-messaging while driving would be outlawed entirely.
House Bill 852 headed to the Senate with a 55-43 vote in the House.
That's only two votes more than the majority needed for passage.
Supporters said the proposal would improve driver safety and stop accidents.
Opponents said the state was going too far and that drivers have many distractions besides cell phones.
