Ribbon Cutting slated for 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25

Mayor-President Melvin L. “Kip” Holden will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Green Light Plan’s Ford Street project at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 25, 2011 in the project right-of-way area, with parking provided at the S.E. Mackey Center (6534 Ford Street). This ribbon cutting ceremony marks the 19th completed roadway construction project for the Green Light Plan.

“With the completion of the Ford Street project, we’re able to see a completely transformed and revitalized area of North Baton Rouge, an area that is critically important to the growth of East Baton Rouge Parish,” said Mayor-President Melvin “Kip” Holden.  “Projects like the Ford Street project are exactly what the Green Light Plan was designed to do – provide safe, enhanced capacity to our key streets and roads, and help grow communities throughout East Baton Rouge Parish for both current and future generations.”

With a total construction cost of $6,122,806.39, the completed Ford Street project replaces the previous narrow, two-lane, open ditch roadway with two new 15-foot travel lanes, sidewalks on both sides of the roadway for pedestrian access, and a 30-foot raised median.  The improvements to the roadway also provide curb ramps for sidewalk access on both sides of the roadway and improved street lighting located along the raised median.

The Ford Street project also included key sewer improvements with the replacing and upsizing of approximately 2,100 feet of existing gravity sewer along Ford Street and Mickens Road.  This work, part of the ongoing parishwide sewer improvements through the City-Parish SSO Program, was included in the Ford Street project to minimize construction time and inconveniences to motorists.

“Together, both the Green Light Plan and SSO Program are working to provide necessary, short-term solutions that improve the infrastructure of Baton Rouge and result in an improved quality of life for our citizens,” said Holden.  “We are committed to constructing projects that are comprehensive in nature and provide the greatest possible benefits to our citizens within the shortest amount of time.”

The new Ford Street includes a safer and more efficient roadway for residents, motorists, and pedestrians traveling throughout the area and provides a significantly improved East-West connection for the North Baton Rouge area between Plank Road and Mickens Road.
