Actor Michael Showers, who was living with a woman in Chalmette and was known for his work on the HBO series “Treme,” was found dead in the Mississippi River in the French Quarter on Wednesday, Aug. 24, and was reported missing to the Sheriff’s Office the day before, Chief Deputy Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

An investigation is continuing into the death of Showers, who was 45 years old.

Pohlmann said while there is no immediate sign of foul play, autopsy results are anticipated and St. Bernard sheriff’s detectives and New Orleans officials are trying to find his missing automobile, a black 2002 Infinity G-20, with Louisiana license plate TAP099.

“It could be an important piece of the puzzle,’’ Pohlmann said of the car. Anyone seeing the vehicle should call the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office at (504) 271-2501 or New Orleans police at 821-2222.

Pohlmann said Showers had lived in Chalmette for about a year with his girlfriend, who reported him missing on Tuesday.

Showers suffered from severe depression and anxiety and was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in March 2011, according to the woman’s missing person’s report.

She last saw him Monday night when he left with a gym bag and told her he was going to work out at a gym, then later told her by phone he was going to get a drink with a friend whom he identified only as Joe, the girlfriend told the Sheriff’s Office. She wasn’t able to reach him by phone after about 11 p.m. Monday.

Pohlmann said he was introduced to Showers recently at a Chalmette restaurant and was told he was on the TV series “Treme,’’ which is about New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina. “He seemed like an interesting fellow with a passion for his work,’’ Pohlmann said. Showers had a recurring role on “Treme” as Capt. John Guidry – head of the NOPD homicide unit.

New Orleans authorities said a steamboat captain spotted a body floating in the water at the French Quarter around 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, the 24th. The body was later identified as Showers.

John Gagliano, chief investigator for the Orleans Parish coroner’s said it appeared the man had been in the water for two days.

In addition to his role on the Emmy-nominated “Treme,” Showers also appeared in other TV series including “Breaking Bad” and “The Vampire Diaries.” He appeared on the big screen as well, with roles in the movies “Traffic,” “I Love You Philip Morris,’’ and this year in “The Tree of Life” and an upcoming film, “Colombiana.’’
