August 6th marks the start of the first annual garfish rodeo produced by the Black Lake Club. Located on Hwy. 1039 in Maurepas, LA, the Club is a long time favorite for local fisherman.
Participants in the rodeo will fish the waters of Lakes Maurepas and Pontchartrain as well as the Tickfaw, Amite and Blind rivers. Fishing begins after 12:00 noon, Saturday, and concludes no later than 12:00 noon, Sunday.
Garfish are a delicious delicacy found in brackish and marine waters. The fish live close to the surface and have a migratory pattern similar to a mackerel. The garfish is a long and slender fish, sometimes reaching 2 to 3 feet in length.
After the final weigh-in, there will be music, food and fun. Food selections will include fried gar, pastalaya and jambalaya.
