Several streets in the Mid City area near downtown Baton Rouge will be subject to closures over the next few days to film scenes for “Universal Soldier: A New Dimension,” a new action movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren.

On Thursday, May 19 between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m., police plan to close Gayosa Street to traffic between North 19th Street and North 22nd Street, along with the section of North 21stStreet between Spanish Town Road and North Street.

Baton Rouge Film Commission Executive Director Amy Mitchell-Smith said the filming at that location Thursday will involve simulated car crashes and stunts, so local residents and passers-by should not be alarmed.

Also on Thursday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m., police will close the section of North 19th Street that runs along the railroad tracks between North Boulevard and Government Street to film other scenes for the movie.

Filming for the movie will actually begin this afternoon in the areas around the North Boulevard overpass.  Police expect to make some intermittent closures today for filming in that area, but don’t plan to interrupt traffic for extended periods of time. The intermittent closures will continue in that area from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, May 20, and again during those same hours on Monday, May 23.

In the new Sony Pictures Entertainment release, Van Damme and Lundgren are reprising the roles they made famous in the original “Universal Solider” movie that was released in 1992.
