Attorney General Buddy Caldwell is notifying Louisiana residents with problem drywall of the updated remediation protocol provided by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The updated remediation protocol is based on a study conducted on behalf of CPSC by Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico. As reported by CPSC, Sandia finds no evidence of a safety hazard to electrical wiring in home electrical systems. The CPSC recommends continuing replacing electrical distribution components of the home electrical system, such as receptacles, switches and circuit breakers, as well as fire safety alarm devices. Sandia simulated long-term exposure of wiring and other electrical components to hydrogen sulfide gas, which is associated with problem drywall.
The remediation guidance for homes with problem drywall calls for the replacement of all:
·Pproblem drywall
·Fire safety alarm devices, including smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
·Electrical distribution components, including receptacles, switches and circuit breakers
·Gas service piping and fire suppression sprinkler systems.
CPSC provides complete recommendations on its website www.DrywallResponse.gov
“I urge you to follow the CPSC’s recommendations if you suspect you have the corrosive Chinese drywall in your homes,” said Caldwell.
The Attorney General’s office is sending letters with the updated remediation protocol to all those who have filed complaints.
