Mayor-President Melvin L. “Kip” Holden will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Sevenoaks Avenue Multi-Purpose Pathway project at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 on the corner of Sevenoaks Avenue and Goodwood Boulevard, with parking provided at Goodwood Park, located at 6025 Sevenoaks Avenue.  This ribbon cutting ceremony marks the 16th completed sidewalk and beautification construction project for the Green Light Plan Beautification Program.

“The driving force behind these Green Light Plan beautification projects is to provide immediate, short-term solutions to improving the look, feel, and functionality of public areas frequently visited and utilized by the citizens of East Baton Rouge Parish,” said Mayor-President Melvin “Kip” Holden.  “Through sidewalk installations, landscaped common grounds with new seating areas, and upgraded crosswalks and stop signs, the improvements represented by the Sevenoaks Avenue project are a perfect example of what this program was designed to do.”

With a total construction cost of $360,735.85 and an actual completion date of January 18, 2011, the Sevenoaks Avenue Multi-Purpose Pathway project includes approximately one mile of landscaped, six-foot wide sidewalk path along Sevenoaks Avenue, which provides for safer access for pedestrians traveling between Lobdell Avenue and Goodwood Boulevard.  The project also includes new crosswalks along Sevenoaks Avenue, seating areas with benches and pet care stations, and new stop signs with upgraded sign posts.

Under the Green Light Plan, a comprehensive transportation and street improvements program approved by East Baton Rouge Parish voters in 2005 and funded through an extension of a half-cent sales and use tax for local street and roadway improvements, three percent of funds are dedicated to sidewalk and landscape projects along roadways in East Baton Rouge Parish.  Within this program, a total of 50 sidewalk improvements and beautification projects are included as projects designed to provide landscaping improvements, sidewalk installations, and public use area improvements for major roadway areas across East Baton Rouge Parish.
